Welcome to the first official day of fall in the Northern Hemisphere, and a happy spring to readers below the equator! Today, everyone on Earth will enjoy 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night.


What Happened This Weekend

  • Middle East Tensions: Israel and Hezbollah are exchanging their heaviest fire since October 7. Hezbollah fired many rockets and missiles at Israel, some of which got through despite most being intercepted. Stay tuned for live updates.
  • Campaign Update: Kamala Harris went into September with a big cash lead over Trump. She accepted CNN’s invitation to debate Trump on October 23 but he called it “too late.”
  • Alabama Shooting: A mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama’s entertainment district left at least 4 dead and multiple injured. No one in custody as of this morning.
  • Soldier Punished: Pvt. Travis King, the U.S. soldier who walked into North Korea last year, got a one-year confinement and a bad discharge after pleading guilty to desertion and assault.
  • Iran Mine Explosion: A methane gas explosion in a coal mine in South Khorasan Province, Iran, has killed at least 51 and injured 20. Rescue efforts ongoing.

What to Expect This Week

Monday

A Coast Guard hearing is ongoing about the Titan submersible implosion in June 2023. Witnesses including former OceanGate employees will be testifying about malfunctions and safety issues leading up to the disaster.

Tuesday

World leaders will be in New York City for the 79th UN General Assembly. Big issues will be on the table including the recent UN vote to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories within a year. President Biden and others including Israeli PM Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Abbas will speak.

Apalachee High School will reopen in phases after the deadliest school shooting of the year. More counseling and law enforcement on campus.

Thursday

NASA is set to launch its SpaceX Crew-9 mission to the ISS at 2:05pm EDT or sooner.

Friday

New tariffs on certain Chinese made products go into effect. Electric vehicles, solar cells and other goods will see rate increases. This is part of President Biden’s trade policy building on former President Trump’s tariffs.

Entertainment Highlights This Week

TV and Streaming: A new version of the procedural drama Matlock starring Kathy Bates debuts tonight at 8pm ET on CBS and Paramount+. “Inside Out 2” the highest grossing animated film of all time starts streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday.

In Theaters: The Wild Robot an animated film with an all star voice cast opens Friday along with Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.

Sports Update

WNBA Playoffs start today with games including Atlanta vs New York and more.

MLB Playoffs are near. Several teams are in already.

2024 Presidents Cup starts Thursday in Quebec. US vs international team.
